--10 of 52--

Ten verses memorized – 42 more to go!!! Congratulations for hanging on and pressing forward in this challenge!

“As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:” 1 Peter 1:14

By itself, this verse leaves the question, “Obedient to what?” I had to back up to the verse I memorized last week, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” (1 Peter 1:13) This verse ends with a semi-colon, meaning that it is to be continued with, “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:” (1 Peter 1:14)

In this verse, we are specifically challenged NOT to fashion ourselves (conform to the same pattern) to the former (previous) lusts (a longing; especially for what is forbidden) that we followed in our ignorance (probably before salvation). As believers (or children of God), our lives should follow a new pattern – the pattern that Christ has set before us, the pattern that is written out for us in God’s Word. We are not ignorant of this pattern because God has given us His Word that we have the freedom to read, study, and apply. Will we be obedient to follow this new pattern? Or will we continue in the pattern of disobedience, following the lusts of our flesh and mind?

What is your tenth verse?

Remember to continually review your other verses! If you need to, set up a schedule to review half of them each day.

If there are any verses that have “gotten rusty,” you might want to take a few minutes to polish them up.

1 Corinthians 3:13-15
Every man's work shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire, and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be save;, yet so as by fire.

I've thought a lot about this verse, particularly as it pertains to my craft (writing). I don't want to have God withdraw my works from the fire full of holes. A cistern that holds no water is no true gift for a King. I want to live my life and use my talent in such a way that I will not be ashamed when I am called to give an account of myself and my work.

I'm enjoying this challenge. I've been memorizing 1 Peter. It's refreshing and strengthening. Rose

Last week I was good at reviewing my verses but struggled with stopping to pick a verse for memorization. This week has brought some new challenges with loving someone. So with God's help I plan to memorize 1Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. I'm familiar with the verse but never have made the time to memorize it. The verse already is giving me strength and a better attitude. Thank You Lord.

Wow, we have already memorized ten verses? That's wonderful!!!

My tenth verse is...
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
-Joshua 1:9

Many times we are afraid and have fear, but do we realize that the Lord is always with us? He will never leave our side! He will be with us wherever we go!

My verse is Galatians 5:16
"This I say then, walk in the spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

This verse pretty much explains itself. The Lord has been teaching me that if I focus on my walk with the Lord and on my relationship with Him, I will have a hard time trying to fulfill my lustful flesh at the same time. If I genuinely "walk in the spirit" I cannot walk in the flesh at the same time!
