Week 21 of 52

“He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeated a matter separateth very friends.” Proverbs 17:9

It is so easy to talk about others –how they annoy us, the sins they are doing, the problems they have, etc. However, love (definition found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8) will cover someone else’s sin, not expose it to others. When we refuse to cover a transgression, ultimately, we are sinning in disobedience to God. Added to that, we hurt our relationship with the person we are gossiping about and also the relationship of that person with the person to whom we are talking.

Do we truly love our brother/sister/parent/friend? Let us “refrain our lips from evil, and our tongue that it speaks no guile” (1 Peter 3:10 paraphrase).

This is an interesting verse - one that I don't think I've heard before. It's so true that we often get into the habit of gossiping about other's shortcomings to our friends, and I regret to say that I probably do this quite often.

I guess it's the idea of forgiveness as well - if you've forgiven someone for something, you don't keep bringing it up again; likewise, 'covering other's sin' instead of sharing it with others will show that person love and mercy.

I looked up 1 Peter 3:10 - it's a very wise verse, I'd like to try and memorise it this week! Today I was reading Romans 1:5 -
'Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.'

Thank you for your ministry through this blog, I really appreciate it :)

@Maddy

Thank you so much for your feedback! :) Gossip is indeed one of those sly sins that we let creep into our lives!!! And I agree with you: covering others' sins does reflect a forgiving heart.

Romans is one of my favorite books right now!!! Thanks for sharing the verse.

I am in Christ, and I am telling you the truth; I do not lie. My conscience is ruled by the Holy Spirit, and it tells me I am not lying. I have great sorrow and always feel much sadness.
