--7 of 52--

“Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:14-15

A man once said, “When I raised my children, I raised them to make a living. I succeeded; they are all making much more money than I ever hoped to and are very successful in the business world.” He grew serious as he added, “But not one of them is serving the Lord.”

This man raised his children to serve the gods of money, business, and worldly success. Other parents raise their children to serve other gods: diet, exercise, fame, self, etc. The challenge from Joshua is still applicable to us today: will we live for temporal gods that do not last for eternity? Or will we serve GOD – the one true living God? Is the verse, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” simply a plaque that hangs on our wall, or is it prevalent in the way we live our life?

Choose you this day whom ye will serve. We do not just “happen” to serve God – we must make a conscious choice. Which choice are we making?

Matthew 6:19-20

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Thank you for keeping me going in Bible memory! :)

Great thoughts about serving God vs. other gods. My parents taught us from the beginning that nothing--not good grades, not financial security, not health, not happiness, not even "achieving our true potential"--was as important as knowing and serving the Lord. Strangely enough, "seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you" is very true. Serving God results in ultimate happiness, even if life doesn't go as planned. I love my Lord and I love my life. God bless my parents!

My week's verses: Ephesians 6:14-16
"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

I've been pondering why certain virtues were given specific placements in the armor. A belt in the old days held the scabbard for your sword (which in verse 17 is identified as "the Spirit, which is the Word of God"). A breastplate protects your heart and vital organs, just as righteousness protects you. As for the feet, I'm reminded: "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news!" Faith--that's obvious. If you trust God (have faith in Him), the devil's lies have no foothold. I'll be meditating on this more, because I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to mine from this passage.

Keep up the memorizing! I enjoy seeing what encourages other people (gives me ideas for future verses to memorize too).

Good Morning, this week there will be a little "twist" on my memorization. As I am going to Mexico on a mission trip in March, I wanted to learn some simple Spanish Bible verses before then. This week I will be memorizing John 14:6 in Spanish.

"Jesús le contestó 'Yo soy el Camino, la Verdad, y la Vida. Nadie viene al Padre sino por mí.'"

My memory verse for this week is 2 Timothy 2:22..."Flee youthful lusts". I decided to memorize this verse after using it in my latest blog post. ;)

My verse this week has been 1John 3:8
He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. This verse stood out to me because it talks about our Lord's work. I've been staying on the word "work" theme and I am loving it.

"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves; but they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise."
2 Corinthians 10:12

The Lord has really used this verse in the past couple weeks to show me that I can not only compare to see how much worse others are than me, and to lift myself up, but also that I can compare myself with others better than me, giving myself a negative outlook. This verse really tells me that my goal should be to focus on Christ, and not on those around me.
